It might be for the best that this scene never made it into the final cut of Guardians of the Galaxy, since it may have inspired a terrible mash-up t-shirt with a drunk Drax in Joker makeup asking, “You wanna know how I got these scars?” Still, if you were curious about Drax’s tattoos in Guardians, this deleted scene has your answer.

There are lots of mysterious things about Guardians of the Galaxy, like the origins of Groot, or the identity of Star-Lord’s biological father, or any number of things you could pick at random from James Gunn’s highly-detailed and wonderfully weird Marvel film. We’ll get answers to some of these things in the sequel, while others will remain a mystery — and that’s totally okay. The world of Guardians was so immersive that we rarely stopped to ask questions about certain elements of it, like Drax’s tattoos.

The deleted scene above comes from Marvel’s Phase 2 box set, which has been delivering all kinds of interesting bonus materials. As you can see, the effects were never completed, so this sequence was scrapped before it was ever fully realized, but it does offer answers about the tattoos on the hulking body of Dave Bautista’s Drax. After watching the scene, you can see why it wasn’t included in the final cut — it just feels unnecessary.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will give us an answer we’re far more interested in, though, as Gunn has teased the reveal of Star-Lord’s dad in the upcoming sequel, set to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
