Last month came word that 'Doctor Who' star Karen Gillan had signed on to star in Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as one of the film's villains. We've heard that Lee Pace will play The Controller and Benicio Del Toro will play Thanos, so what villain could Gillan be playing? Perhaps one of the reasons why figuring out Gillan's character has been so difficult is because her character may not even have originated in the Marvel universe...

A newspaper in Gillan's home country of Scotland ran an article on her role in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' with the following note: "The 'Doctor Who' star will play Angela, a flame-haired, sword-wielding bounty hunter."

The picture shown in the article is the image shown above of Angela, a character co-created by Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman, who first appeared in "Spawn #9" in 1993. After a lengthy legal dispute, Gaiman was able to retain full rights to the character and, in 2013, announced he was returning to Marvel and bringing Angela with him.

Her first extended adventure in the Marvel universe? "Guardians of the Galaxy #5," in stores this July.

For the uninitiated, Angela is something like the opposite of Spawn; a bounty hunter working for heaven. She also, as you could probably guess, is pretty badass with a sword. (Interestingly enough, she had a very minor appearance in the 1997 'Spawn' movie, played by Laura Stepp.)

Now it could just be a leap in logic from a newspaper that doesn't know better (and just matching red-haired actress with equally red-haired superhero) but it does seem to make a lot of sense.
