We don’t yet know how deeply the next Guardians of the Galaxy will delve into the history of its core five (save for Star-Lord’s pappy), while Disney XD’s upcoming animated series has taken care to introduce detailed origins glossed over by the films. Next up is Drax the Destroyer, whose history with Ronan the Accuser may have been more complicated than we realize.

As debuted over the weekend on Disney XD, the latest look at the animated Guardians of the Galaxy series previews Drax’s origins as “The Destroyer,” a gladiator competing for a shot at getting close to Ronan (presumably to take revenge for his family, though the Disney XD standards somewhat skirt that). Drax also reveals his heart (not literally, but expect plenty of that old chestnut) in sparing another competitor, while the animated prequel also affords our first look at the Nova Corps, including Rhomann Dey.

Premiering through August and September, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features Will Friedle as Star-Lord, David Sobolov as Drax, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot and Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, and James Arnold Taylor as both Yondu and Cosmo. So reads the full synopsis:

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.
