Guardians of the Galaxy gave (or at least alluded to) backstories of only four of its five members, but haven’t we all wondered who puts the Groot in “I am Groot?” Get the full story of Groot’s growth (as well as our first animated look at Ronan the Accuser) in a new short from Disney XD’s animated Guardians of the Galaxy!

Where previously we got a look at Star-Lord’s origins after the movie left off, Marvel’s latest Guardians of the Galaxy sneak peak fills in Groot’s history with Marvel lore, showing the fate of Groot’s species from Planet X at the hands of Ronan the Accuser, movie-accurate Dark Aster and all. Trevor Devall’s Rocket narrates the short (the whole “I am Groot” thing wouldn’t work so well in voiceover), which also teases the impending friendship between Marvel’s most simultaneously adorable and terrifying duo.

Premiering through August and September, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features Will Friedle as Star-Lord, David Sobolov as Drax, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot and Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, and James Arnold Taylor as both Yondu and Cosmo. So reads the full synopsis:

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.
