Watch a Featurette About Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’ 70mm Roadshow

Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight is one of the year’s most hotly anticipated remaining releases, just as any new feature from the less-than-prolific auteur must be. The recent unveiling of a new trailer has Tarantino fans more feverishly excited than ever, but one of the most tantalizing aspects of the film can’t be conveyed through a mere teaser. The film will break new ground by screening on 70mm film at nearly 100 locations in late December in the biggest 70mm event in recent history, dwarfing the 11 screens that played Interstellar on 70mm and the 16 screens that played The Master. Tarantino, an avid supporter of film preservation, has mounted this ‘road show’ in an effort to drum up enthusiasm for the 70mm format among a new generation of audiences.

In a new featurette on YouTube, Tarantino and Hateful Eight stars Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, and cinematographer Robert Richardson and others speak about the process by which they shot a feature on Ultra Panavision 70mm. The wider-gauged film has six individual tracks of sound, which is a technical way of saying that the film projection has sharper definition, more brilliant colors, and richer sound. It’s an all-around more immersive experience, flooding viewers with a sensory overload. At 96 theaters, the road show will likely be available in most major cities, so everyone will have the chance to experience the majesty for themselves. But for now, give the video a look-see.

The 70mm roadshow begins on Christmas Day and The Hateful Eight opens nationwide on January 8.
