How do you say “sike!” in Japanese? Master animator and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki dun got us again, totally convincing us that he was really retiring this time by saying things like “I am done making movies” and “This time is for real.” We believed him like a bunch of fools when he announced a “semi-retirement” following the completion of Princess Mononoke, we believed him when he said he wanted to call it quits after Spirited Away, and we believed him back in 2013 when he declared The Wind Rises to be his final feature. The Boy Who Cried Not Making Any More Movies has pulled the same trick on us all again, with the news that he’ll un-retire one more time for a new feature called Boro the Caterpillar.

Miyazaki began work on Boro as a short project last year, treating it as an opportunity to dabble with computer-generated animation as opposed to his widely recognized hand-drawn style. There were murmurs that he might expand it to feature length, but it was all rumor and conjecture — until a pre-Oscars interview about Best Animated Feature nominee The Red Turtle ran yesterday. Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki sat down to say a few words about the studio‘s co-production, but his most major soundbite was the apparent announcement that Miyazaki was indeed at it again. The good folks at Kotaku have noted a report from Japanese publication The Kyodo News in which Miyazaki’s return has been confirmed, and that Suzuki would produce his next film.

Personally, I am looking forward to the release of Boro the Caterpillar, just as I am looking forward to Miyazaki’s next declaration of retirement, and the new feature film that will inevitably follow it.
