HBO has its hands full with big-ticket dramas in one stage or another, but certainly fans of the UK-adapted The Night Of are curious to see if the series merits another season. To wit, HBO bosses say Season 2 is still in active development, with the aim to return star John Turturro in a leading role.

Where previously executive producer, writer and director Steven Zaillian said he’d be open to a second season of The Night Of if the right idea came along, HBO boss Casey Bloys intimated to Variety that Zaillian is actively pondering a new subject. That said, we shouldn’t necessarily expect a new season within the yearlong timeframe, but perhaps more open-endedly:

Do you want another season of “The Night Of”?

Yes, absolutely. The only issue with doing another season is for them to come up with an idea that excites them. Steve [Zaillian] and Richard [Price] are talking and sharing ideas. I think it’ll be a longer process, probably. Both of them take their time and will only do something they’re really passionate and excited about. They’re not going to do another season just to do another season. […]

My guess is, it would be [one case in a season]. I think they’re talking about a lot of different variations, so at this point, all I know is that they’re talking about it. They haven’t come to us with anything. They’re just trying to get themselves excited about a take.

The original UK Criminal Justice similarly went on to a second season featuring new cast and story, though Bloys seemed to suggest Zaillian had in mind to keep John Turturro in the cast, potentially even in his psoriasis-ridden role as John Stone. “I think that’s what they’re thinking,” said Bloys. “But all of it is speculation at this point.”

It’s possible Bloys might have more information by the time HBO presents at the winter press tour, but does The Night Of Season 2 have a place in the new HBO regime? Watch the original trailer below.
