Sad though we’ll be to see Cullen Bohannon finally bring Hell on Wheels to a hard stop (admittedly in 2016, with AMC already lining up its next western), the first look at Season 5 seems the most exciting and exotic yet. Bullets fly, trains collide, and there’s even a crazy dude in a mask in our first look at Hell on Wheels’ fifth and final season!

“Changing sides changes everything” warns the first trailer for Hell on Wheels Season 5, as the whereabouts of Cullen’s family become a higher priority than his switch from the Union Pacific to Central Pacific railroads. Doc seems his usual surly self, while the Swede pops into frame, and Cullen’s new enemies appear to include a Chinese magnate and a crazy masked man. Why not, really?

Changing sides, changes everything. Hell on Wheels returns July 18 at 9|8c.

Premiering the first of seven episodes on July 18, and returning for the final seven in 2016, so reads the full Hell on Wheels final season synopsis:

Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) finds himself a stranger in a strange land — the mountain town of Truckee, Calif., home to the Central Pacific Railroad. This rough railroad town teems with thousands of Chinese workers, foreign in language, culture and traditions.

Despite the challenges of corralling his new workforce, Cullen leads the Herculean effort to tunnel through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, sometimes achieving only inches a day in the race to complete the first Transcontinental Railroad.

There’s plenty of time for Hell on Wheels to change tracks before next summer, but are you all-aboard for the final ride on July 18?
