Rarely has the series finale to any TV series gone by without at least some major backlash over its content, and 'How I Met Your Mother' is no exception. Last night's "Last Forever," jumped through time in between the years 2013 and 2030, filling in Ted's story about the mother, with at least one major twist that naturally had fans in an uproar. So, what do series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have to say about yet another controversial finale?

You're warned of major spoilers from the 'How I Met Your Mother' finale from here on out, but however expected some of the twists might have been, a strong portion of 'How I Met Your Mother' fandom were outraged to find that the mother had indeed died, while Ted's long-winded tale took place to convince his kids to accept his getting back with Robin. The series had arguably always focused more on Ted's connection to Robin than any potential role the mother might have had.

Thomas in particular took to Twitter to thank fans for kind words regarding the series, however polarizing the return to Robin might have proven.

Thank you all. I mean it: Every possible reaction to the last 44 minutes ... thank you all ... The fact that we have been a TV sitcom that has received this much passion from fans, for 9 years (not just tonight) -- thank you. We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us. We did a finale about life's twists and turns and that is not always what happens ... but THANKS! Seriously - no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU ... you were with us. We love you. Thanks for this ride.

Of course, even with all the various twist and turns, we might see more from 'How I Met Your Mother' in the future, as series star Alyson Hannigan revealed that at least 18 minutes of material had been cut from the running time, while both Thomas and Josh Radnor previewed to Entertainment Weekly that we'd see at least one mystery wrapped up in a season 9 DVD extra. "There may be a few mysteries you think you’ve seen the last of, but there might be a little something later. Without giving too much away, we toyed around with creating a little video to be released sometime after the series finale to sort of pay off one last little thing."

Pineapple, anyone?
