What an interesting clash of cultures. Katniss Everdeen, butt-kicking savior of Suzanne Collins’ ‘The Hunger Games,’ stands for independence, self-sacrifice and survival under harsh conditions. Barbie, the iconic Mattel toy, stands for bathing suits, nightgowns and flirting with Ken. Can the two ideals intertwine?

Mattell seems ready to try, as they unveil the first look at Barbie Katniss, which EW shares in a first-look exclusive. At least Mattel avoided the obvious wardrobe choice – Everdeen’s fiery dress – in favor of her battle-ready Hunger Games gear, complete with a mockingjay pin and bow-and-arrow set.

“I chose to dress her in the outfit she wears during the games, since this is where all the non-stop action takes place and is instantly recognizable by fans,” said figure designer Bill Greening of the Katniss Barbie. “Hopefully Hunger Games fans can appreciate the attention to detail. … The doll’s minimalistic style and details — such as her loosely braided hair and makeup-free look — also really embody the heroic character Katniss.”

This isn’t the Barbie of our youth, the one that’s expertly spoofed in the ‘Toy Story’ films. Maybe this suggests a shifting in tides away from superficial toys for young girls? Lisa Simpson will be so proud!

Fans of ‘The Hunger Games’ will be able to pre-order their own Katniss Barbie starting today by visiting BarbieCollector.com. The dolls will be delivered sometime in August.
