‘Hungry Hungry Hippos: The Movie’ Is Actually Happening

‘Hungry Hungry Hippos: The Movie’ is a real thing. We hope you’re sitting down for this. It may be too late because the headline alone probably made you faint but the news only gets worse from here. The joke that people made when ‘Battleship’ was coming out is now actually happening for real. ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos: The Movie’ you guys.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Hasbro, the company that teamed with Universal to bring you ‘Battleship,’ has signed a new deal to bring three of their properties to the movies. Those three games are ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos,’ ‘Monopoly’ and the toy Action Man. ‘Monopoly’ had previously been in development at Universal with Ridley Scott and is now part of the new deal (Scott remains involved in a producing capacity).

The new deal is set up with independent production company Emmett/Furla Films, the financiers behind terrible movies like ‘Righteous Kill’ and ’88 Minutes.’

The good news (??…) is that the ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos’ movie will be animated and won’t be adapted into some ‘Jurassic Park’ style blockbuster action movie. It will be aimed towards kids but it will still be interesting to see how they plan to adapt a game that involved plastic hippos gobbling up white marbles into a movie.

Action Man was a ‘G.I. Joe’ ripoff; sort of like the Go-Bots to Transformers. Considering how well the ‘G.I. Joe’ movies turned out (), Hasbro will try to make a similar style movie.

To help eliminate another ‘Battleship’ style failure, Hasbro will bring each of the movies in under $100 million (‘Battleship,’ by comparison, cost over $200 million). Though there has been no formal announcement, one has to think this will end the once promising partnership between Universal and Hasbro that, to date, produced only one movie. (‘Ouija’ was put into turnaround by the studio.)

So, yes. ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos: The Movie.’ Can ‘Crocodile Dentist’ be far behind?
