'Oculus' Director Set for 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' RebootNick Romano |
Insert joke on horror title here, perhaps something like, "I still, still know what you did last summer," or "I definitely still know what you did last summer" ...
'I Know What You Did Last Summer' was one of the most popular horror titles of the '90s and helped define the slasher genre for the decade, so we should have seen this one coming: Sony Pictures will introduce this classic to newer generations with an 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' reboot. What did you expect? 'Scream' is already getting made into a TV series.
Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe starred in the original as teens who hit a pedestrian with their car one summer night, only to dispose of the body instead of reporting it to the police, which would have been too easy of a fix. As a result, they're stalked by a mysterious killer who uses a signature hook hand to off people, and who leaves creepy notes around from which the film derives its title, "I know what you did last summer."
There was also the sequel, 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,' and an even worse direct-to-DVD release, 'I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,' the latter of which featured none of the original cast members. The next logical step, of course, is to reboot the franchise, and Deadline was first to report the news. 'Oculus' director/co-writer Mike Flanagan is adapting the original Lois Duncan book with his partner Jeff Howard, and the duo are also producing it with original film producer Neal Mortiz. The goal is have the reboot ready in time for a 2016 release, and done on
the cheap a lower budget.
So what do you think? Best news ever? A symbol of the end of times? Best #TBT?
