It was inevitable that Shane would have to die. For those who had read 'The Walking Dead' comics, we all knew Shane had died much earlier in the series on paper, and with the show making him increasingly erratic and more hard-hearted, it had to happen eventually. While the show wasn't as successful in painting Shane as a truly villainous character and worthy of being killed, it was still quite an intense moment to watch Rick and Shane's final stand-off. And naturally, with Shane gone and the action moving to more interesting locations in the third season, the show got better. Shane's death was really for the best.
