A new drama starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana doesn’t really sound like something you might see from J.J. Abrams’ production company, which isn’t a bad thing. The first trailer for Infinitely Polar Bear, produced by Bad Robot, has been released, and promises yet another stirring and poignant performance from Ruffalo as a father struggling with manic depression.

Ruffalo plays Cameron, a manic-depressive man who lives separately from his wife Maggie (Saldana) and their two daughters, self-medicating with alcohol instead of his prescription drugs. In an effort to help Cameron, Maggie asks him to take full responsibility of their lively daughters while she moves away, and Cameron finds the challenge to be both overwhelming and rewarding.

Ruffalo is having a a nice run of roles lately, reinvigorating the part of Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Avengers films, and delivering a powerful and understated performance in Foxcatcher — a performance that’s been oddly overlooked this awards season. Infinitely Polar Bear earned some acclaim when it played the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where Sony picked it up for distribution and then it sort of disappeared until now.

Infinitely Polar Bear was written and directed by Maya Forbes, who previously wrote screenplays for The Rocker and Monsters vs. Aliens. The film is being released internationally in March before it hits U.S. theaters on June 19.
