The ending of Avengers: Infinity War will reverberate for years, but leaves Marvel TV in a tricky spot. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has already acknowledged the MCU blockbuster once, and one star hints the universe-shattering finale will continually play out on the ABC drama.

You’re warned of full spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers: Infinity War from here on out, but it was one thing for Friday’s episode to reference “weird stuff happening in New York” – it would be quite another if half the S.H.I.E.L.D. cast suddenly disintegrated with Thanos’ snap. The Marvel TV drama once bound to address the fallout of Marvel films faces an unusual challenge to pick up where Infinity War left off, and it remains to be seen if Season 5’s remaining hours will incorporate the Leftovers-style rapture. TVLine posed the question to star Adrian Pasdar, who suggested more Infinity War references were coming:

Yeah, we do have stuff in the background periodically that references and ties into whats going on with Avengers: Infinity War. Yeah, they use that. They always tie in very well with what’s going on [in the movies].

It’s worth pointing out Pasdar went on to state he hadn’t actually seen the ending of Infinity War, so his word may be suspect. Still, Pasdar’s character wasn’t involved in the Friday scene that alluded to Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange’s battle in New York, so it stands to reason S.H.I.E.L.D. will address other aspects of the film in upcoming episodes. Pasdar’s role as Glenn Talbot also underwent a notable shift – taking over the Graviton debut teased in Season 1 – so it’s worth wondering where S.H.I.E.L.D. finds room to address Infinity War in all that. Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen also suggested back in March the third Avengers film would “open a new playground for us“ in a potential sixth season.

We’ll find out more with Friday’s “The One Who Will Save Us All,” but do Marvel TV shows have any hope of reconciling with Infinity War?
