Universal Announces Amazing Anniversary Box Set
Universal

Universal has been very kind to film buffs this year. In celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary, they’ve been rolling out many of their most iconic and acclaimed films on Blu-ray for the first time, with often stellar results. In fact, this week’s release of ‘Jaws’ in high definition knocked our socks off. However, it turns out that they were only getting started: on November 6th, they will unleash a monstrous 25-disc set that’s bound to make you drool a little.

Here’s the one sentence sales pitch: an entire century of film history (and an entire studio’s legacy) summed up in a single package. The Universal 100th Anniversary Collection Limited Edition (that’s a bit of a mouthful), which will be available on DVD and Blu-ray, begins with ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘Dracula’ and concludes with ‘Despicable Me’ and, uh, ‘The Fast and the Furious.’ Yeah, we thought those were odd choices, too. Still, there’s no getting around the sheer number of classics that are packaged between those films: ‘Spartacus,’ ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ ‘American Graffiti,’ ’The Sting,’ ‘Jaws,’ ‘Animal House,’ ‘E.T.,’ ‘Scarface,’ ‘Back to the Future,’ ‘Do the Right Thing,’ Jurassic Park’…the list goes on and on.

Here’s the complete rundown of what will be included in this epic set:

·         All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

·         Dracula (1931)

·         Buck Privates (1941)

·         Pillow Talk (1959)

·         Spartacus (1960)

·         To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)

·         The Birds (1963)

·         American Graffiti (1973)

·         The Sting (1973)

·         Jaws (1975)

·         National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978)

·         E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

·         Scarface (1983)

·         The Breakfast Club (1985)

·         Back to the Future (1985)

·         Out of Africa (1985)

·         Field of Dreams (1989)

·         Do the Right Thing (1989)

·         Jurassic Park (1993)

·         Schindler’s List  (1993)

·         Apollo 13 (1995)

·         The Fast and the Furious (2001)

·         The Bourne Identity (2002)

·         Mamma Mia! The Movie (2008)

·         Despicable Me (2010)

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to the features, the set also includes a handful of vintage short films and a whole bunch of animated shorts, many of them starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Woody Woodpecker. And then there’s the entire bonus disc of special features. Oh, and the soundtrack CD collecting many of the most memorable themes featured in the collection.

In many ways, this set feels like the Hollywood/mainstream answer to Janus Films’ Essential Art House collection. It’s a film collection that’s going to be absurdly expensive (no price has been announced yet) and coveted by film fans the world over, who want it not only for the rich contents, but for the chance to show it off on their media shelf. Even with the handful head-scratching inclusions (Really? ‘Mama Mia’? Really?!), this is a literal embarassment of riches.

You now know what to ask your rich relatives for this Christmas, movie fans. Here’s the entire press release, lazily copied and pasted for your reading pleasure:
