See the Cast of ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ Then and Now

Josie and the Pussycats
Universal

Released in 2001 and based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name, ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ follows a girl band whose sudden rise to fame is engineered by a record label using their music to brainwash teenagers. The bubbly satirical film starred Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid, and although it was a failure at the box office, it went on to find a following over the years on home video and cable, becoming something of a cult classic in its own right — more like a “pop-cult classic.” 13 years later, we revisit the cast of the film and see what they’re up to now.

Then: Rachael Leigh Cook was at the height of her fame when she was cast as Josie McCoy, the lead singer and guitarist of Josie and the Pussycats. Cook had made her film debut in 1995′s ‘The Baby-Sitter’s Club,’ and had appeared in ‘She’s All That’ and ‘Antitrust.’ She had also previously appeared as a younger version of her ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ co-star Parker Posey in the indie film ‘The House of Yes.’

Now: Cook’s career went more low-profile after 2001, but she’s still appeared in her fair share of films, including ‘Nancy Drew,’ ‘Descent’ (in which she reunited with ‘Josie’ co-star Rosario Dawson), and ‘Blonde Ambition.’ She had a recurring role on ‘Psych’ and has lent her voice to episodes of Adult Swim’s ‘Robot Chicken,’ created by Seth Green, who had a small role in ‘Josie.’ She starred in and was the executive producer of the 2012 film ‘Broken Kingdom,’ and is the star of the TNT crime series ‘Perception,’ which was recently renewed for a third season.

Then: Rosario Dawson played Valerie Brown, the bass player and back-up singer for the Pussycat’s and the more intelligent one of the trio. Dawson made her acting debut in the 1995 film ‘Kids,’ and had appeared in ‘Down to You’ with Freddie Prinze Jr., Cook’s co-star in ‘She’s All That.’

Now: Dawson went on to star in films such as ‘Men in Black II,’ ‘The Rundown,’ ‘Sin City,’ ‘Clerks II,’ and ‘Death Proof.’ She’s recently appeared in films like ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,’ ‘Girl Walks Into a Bar,’ and ‘Trance.’ Up next for Dawson is a role in the new film ‘Gimme Shelter’ with Vanessa Hudgens and Brendan Fraser, and she’ll be reprising her role as Gail in ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.’

Tara Reid, Melody Valentine

Then: Tara Reid played Melody Valentine, the band’s sweet but really ditzy and gullible drummer. Reid had previously made a name for herself with parts in films like ‘Urban Legends,’ ‘Cruel Intentions,’ and ‘American Pie.’ Her ‘Cruel Intentions’ co-star Ryan Phillippe starred with Rachael Leigh Cook in ‘Antitrust,’ also released in 2001.

Now: Reid also starred in ‘American Pie 2,’ and in the films ‘National Lampoon’s Van Wilder,’ ‘My Boss’s Daughter,’ and ‘Alone in the Dark.’ But then her career took a bit of a turn, and she started appearing in B-movies like ‘The Crow: Wicked Prayer,’ ‘Incubus,’ and ‘The Fields.’ In 2011, she appeared on the eighth season of the UK’s ‘Big Brother’ reality series. Reid recently reprised the role of Vicky in ‘American Reunion’ and starred in the SyFy TV movie ‘Sharknado.’

Gabriel Mann, Alan M.

Then: Gabriel Mann played Alan M., a folk musician known as “the sexiest man in Riverdale” and Josie’s love interest throughout the movie. Mann had previously appeared in ‘I Shot Andy Warhold’ and the 1998 version of ‘Great Expectations.’ The same year as ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ was released, he appeared in the film ‘Summer Catch’ with Freddie Prinze Jr., Cook’s ‘She’s All That’ co-star.

Now: Mann played Danny Zorn in ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘The Bourne Supremacy,’ and has also appeared in ‘The Life of David Gale,’ ‘The Ramen Girl,’ ’80 Minutes,’ and ‘Psych 9.’ He voiced Bruce Banner on ‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,’ and currently stars on the hit series ‘Revenge.’ Mann can be seen next in ‘Chavez’ with Michael Pena.

Alan Cumming, Wyatt Frame

Then: Alan Cumming played Wyatt Frame, the band’s manipulative manager and promoter. Cumming had previously appeared in another music film, ‘Spice World,’ and was also known for roles in ‘Emma’ and ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,’ and his work as a stage actor.

Now: Cumming has an incredibly diverse resume, including roles in ‘X2: X-Men United,’ the ‘Spy Kids’ films, ‘Burlesque,’ and ‘The Tempest.’ He had a recurring role on ‘The L Word,’ starred on the SyFy miniseries ‘Tin Man,’ and currently stars on the hit series ‘The Good Wife.’ He’s also the voice of Gutsy Smurf in the ‘Smurfs’ films, and in 2013 he starred in an acclaimed Broadway production of ‘Macbeth’ in which he played all of the roles.

Parker Posey, Fiona

Then: Parker Posey played Fiona, the CEO of MegaRecords who uses the music of naive young bands to brainwash teens into following trends. Posey was known for roles in ‘Dazed and Confused,’ ‘Party Girl,’ ‘Scream 3,’ and her work with filmmaker Christopher Guest on films like ‘Waiting for Guffman’ and ‘Best in Show.’ She had also appeared in ‘The Anniversary Party,’ a film written, directed, and produced by her ‘Josie’ co-star Alan Cumming and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Now: Posey also appeared in the Christopher Guest films ‘A Mighty Wind’ and ‘For Your Consideration,’ and has starred in ‘Blade: Trinity,’ ‘Superman Returns,’ and ‘The Eye.’ She’s had memorable recurring roles on the shows ‘The Big C,’ ‘The Good Wife’ (with Alan Cumming), and ‘Louie,’ and has also guest-starred on ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘New Girl.’ Posey recently appeared in the HBO film ‘Hemingway and Gellhorn.’
