It feels like forever and a day we’ve been dividing ships of one dystopian and/or supernatural couple or another, but certainly Joss Whedon deserves credit for Buffy the Vampire Slayer cementing the trend. Over a decade later, fans are still torn over which en-souled vampire marks Buffy’s one true love, but Joss Whedon has formally made his choice. Sound the alarm, and get out your stakes.

Speaking with Complex over the decision to return to Twitter with his ongoing Save The Day campaign, Whedon naturally braved the hordes of Buffy fans shipping either Buffy and Angel, or the latter years of Buffy and Spike. We probably should have guessed Whedon’s answer, given how breakout a character Spike proved to be on either Buffy, or Angel’s own spinoff, but it seems #TeamSpike is firmly in the lead:

I’m a Buffy/Spike shipper. I always felt like he was a more evolved person, but that’s like saying Juliet’s going to be so happy with Benvolio and everyone will love it. Buffy/Angel is for the ages; Buffy/Spike is maybe for me.

Then again, Whedon also had an alternative suggestion:

Actually, I’m a Spike/Angel shipper. Completely re-write the equation.

As any Buffy fan likely knows, their pairing was implied at least once over the course of the franchise, so can we get that question finally out there and settled? Come on, Joss. You have time.

In the meantime, feel free to dust Whedon’s assertions and continue the never-ending war. All fandom is beautiful, and I wanna see how it ends.
