A brand-new trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 has dropped during the Japan Expo in France, and finally reveals some actual details about the sequel's story.

Lightning has apparently been brought to this new world as some sort of divine act to save the souls of the populous. Apparently between sequels, Lightning has turned into a Joan of Nazareth, and the prophecy has already foretold of her death.

There are plenty of familiar faces joining Lightning on her journey this time around, and this is the first time we're seeing just how much of Final Fantasy 13's cast will be included in this latest follow-up. The revelation that Lightning has possibly given up her humanity to become more powerful is an interesting development, but one that falls in line with the heavy religious overtones of her quest.

It remains to be seen just how influenced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 will be by religion, but this trailer certainly gives us an idea. The game's not due out until 2014, which means you'll have plenty of time to analyze the theological themes in this trailer.
