Lin-Manuel Miranda delivered what may very well be the best Broadway musical in years with his hip-hop take on the life of Alexander Hamilton. But before Hamilton became the sort of hit that most people can only see if they’re lucky enough to win a lottery drawing, Miranda had another successful show with In the Heights, the Tony award-winning musical about a Dominican-American neighborhood in Washington Heights, New York. And it’s that musical — not Hamilton, sorry — that’s making the leap to the big screen.

Look, once Hamilton proves its longevity and if Miranda is game, we could still get a movie based on his most recent musical sometime in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future. But until then, THR reports that Miranda is teaming with The Weinstein Company to produce a feature film based on his hit musical In the Heights. The project was previously in development at Universal until the studio flinched at director Kenny Ortega’s $37 million budget.

Now Miranda has taken the rights over to The Weinstein Company, where he hopes to produce a $15 million adaptation. As with HamiltonIn the Heights features music and lyrics by Miranda, who also had a starring role in the original run as a young bodega shop owner who narrates the story, which unfolds over the course of a few days in the largely Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights.

In the Heights ran on Broadway from 2008 to 2011, and bowed at London’s West End in 2015. The production picked up four Tony awards (with 13 nominations) and a Grammy for best musical show album. Miranda will be “heavily involved” with the film adaptation, though it’s not clear if he’ll reprise his role from the stage production.

Just today Disney confirmed Miranda’s casting opposite Emily Blunt in Rob Marshall’s Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the musical classic starring Julie Andrews. That film will hit theaters on December 25, 2018. By then, you might have finally gotten the chance to see Hamilton.
