Mark Wahlberg is heading back into buddy cop comedy territory, but this time with a rom-com twist. The actor, who previously buddied up to Will Ferrell in the cop comedy The Other Guys, has joined Partners, a film described in the vein of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with Wahlberg answering to an agent from the FBI who just happens to be a woman.

Deadline reports that Wahlberg will headline Partners, a film compared to the Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie action comedy, but with “big action set pieces” — an odd comparison, since Mr. and Mrs. Smith definitely had big action set pieces. Wahlberg will play a cop who has a one-night stand with a woman, only to discover that she’s an FBI agent and he’s been assigned to work with her on a new case. Deadline’s Mike Fleming adds his typical, casually sexist slant to the piece:

Instead of the prototypical bromance, this one will pair him with–eek–a female partner.

Sure, because there’s nothing typical about pairing a man and a woman in a rom-com, and gosh, it’s so terrifying for a man to have to answer to a woman in any setting — especially at work.

Anyway! Wahlberg doesn’t typically appear in romantic films, so it might be a nice change of pace for the action-centric actor. Up next, Wahlberg is re-teaming with Will Ferrell for the comedy Daddy’s Home, and is shooting Deep Water Horizon with Peter Berg — he’s also in talks to reunite with Berg again for the action thriller Mile 22.
