While he’s not donning the vibranium suit and saving the world as Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman has been moonlighting as Thurgood Marshall, the first-ever black Supreme Court Justice who rose to fame when he took on one of the cases that defined the Civil Rights Movement.

In this new trailer for Marshall, Boseman’s lawyer is still in his early days, eager to prove himself, and in that eagerness signs himself on to a case that seems to gather more wrinkles the longer the legal battle drags on. Fighting racism and a segregationist court, Marshall partners up with young Jewish lawyer Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad) to bring whoever is responsible to justice.

MARSHALL, based on the early career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, follows the young lawyer (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) against his wealthy white socialite employer (Kate Hudson) in a sexual assault and attempted murder trial. In need of a high-profile victory but muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall is partnered with young Jewish lawyer Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad) who has never tried a case. They struggle against a hostile storm of fear and prejudice, driven to discover the truth in a sensationalized trial that helped lay the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement.

Marshall also stars Dan Stevens and James Cromwell, is directed by Reginald Hudlin, and hits theaters October 13.
