Marvel Announces Even More 'Avengers 2' Footage Will Debut During 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'Mike Sampson |
The original 'Avengers 2' trailer plan was that the first footage would debut on October 28, immediately following that night's episode of 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' on ABC. Not 24 hours after that announcement, a bootleg copy of the trailer leaked online. Disney and Marvel did the right thing and, instead of fighting to keep the bootlegs off the internet for a week, they pushed up the reveal and released an HD copy online. It didn't hurt the trailer (it still broke all kinds of records), but it did hurt that the planned synergy. 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' was primed for a big ratings boost and the trailer leak hurt that. But, Marvel's got some new plans. Plans that will make fans happy as well as give 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' that boost it needed.
In a press release, Marvel said a hearty "thank you" to all the fans who watched (and watched and watched) the 'Avengers 2' trailer. And, because, as they say, "the best way to say thanks is to give you more," they're giving us two exclusive looks at 'Avengers 2' over the next two weeks.
First, after next week's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,' they will debut exclusive footage from 'Avengers 2' in addition to the new trailer. Then, on November 4 at 9:00pm, Marvel will air 'Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp to Pop!' on ABC with even more 'Avengers 2' footage. That's a lot of footage!
Tied to all this is a mysterious announcement Marvel sent earlier today to Los Angeles based press for an event on the morning of October 28 at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. It's described as a "Marvel Studios Special Event" but no further information was given. One theory we had is that Marvel is using the opportunity to share the longer Comic-Con footage of 'Avengers 2' to a wider audience (and that that footage may be what we see during 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' later that night). Another theory is one we floated on Twitter:
Remember when DC wasted their massive 'Justice League' info-dump on a shareholder conference call? Heh, that's just not how Marvel does it. They like showmanship and spectacle. What if they used this opportunity to showcase and announce their upcoming slate of films in a very big, very public way? Bring the new 'Doctor Strange' out on stage, or announce the title of 'Captain America: Civil War' with Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans on hand? We get that Marvel sorta already does this in Hall H during Comic-Con, but that's at a set time of year and largely for the fans. This is an event that can take place whenever (and wherever) Marvel wants it to and would be primarily for industry and the press.
We have no specific intel on this "Marvel Studios Special Event" and our sources (so far) are staying mum. It could be nothing, it could be something. But, knowing Marvel the way we know Marvel...it's probably something.
