10 Marvel TV Spinoffs We’d Like to See Besides ‘Agent Carter’

Marvel TV Spinoffs
Marvel Studios

Marvel surprised us all the other day with the revelation that ‘Captain America’ spinoff one-shot ‘Agent Carter’ could potentially join ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ in her own ongoing TV series, while a number of other potential Marvel series projects have also entered development. We’ve given our picks for which unseen Marvel characters deserve their own TV series, but who from the established cinematic universe would we most want to see in their own live-action TV spinoffs?

1

The Howling Commandos

We’d expect any potential series involving Peggy Carter (assuming it keeps to a post WWII era) to feature the Howling Commandos, who were given criminally little to do in the first ‘Captain America’ movie, though why not feature them in their own series? That way, we could feature Dum Dum Dugan (the very TV-friendly Neal McDonough) leading a team of his own across international missions, dipping into ‘Captain America’ characters as necessary, potentially even in flashback. And who could resist that hat?

The Warriors Four

Fandral, Volstagg, Lady Sif and Hogun were certainly given their due in the first ‘Thor’ film, as well as what we’ve seen of ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ but how better to differentiate from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' than with an ongoing series set in the fantasy realm of Asgard? Not only would Jaimie Alexander make a fantastic lead for the series and ABC’s lineup, but both Ray Stevenson and Zachary Levi have been exceptionally TV friendly in the past (assuming Josh Dallas, the original Fandral was still bound to ‘Once Upon A Time’).

A ‘Warriors Four’ series would combine ABC’s fantasy interests with some of its most popular properties, and could even attract Chris Hemsworth to the mix now and again. Maybe. Probably.

3

The Winter Soldier

A ‘Winter Soldier’ series would depend on the character’s survival of the upcoming movie (Coulson notwithstanding), but Sebastian Stan’s forthcoming Bucky Barnes evolution (SPOILER!) would make an ideal reformed lead for the head of his own series, lending more of a spy-thriller edge to what we’ve seen from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Not to mention, Sebastian Stan has history with ABC in his role as the Mad Hatter of ‘Once Upon A Time,' so we’ll eat our hats if the character doesn’t at least pop up on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ at some point.

4

Howard Stark

Like the Howling Commandos, we’d expect Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark to have some role tangent to the potential ‘Agent Carter’ TV series, especially given their interaction within the short. It’s certainly been suggested before that Stark’s papa would make for a fine focus in his own right, adding a dash of the ‘Captain America’ and ‘Mad Men’ period flare with a retro-tech influence of ‘Iron Man.’ Think Roger Sterling with a government contract, and we’re already pouring the scotch!

5

Mike Peterson

Granted, Marvel has more or less established that ‘Angel’ alum J. August Richards won’t be donning yellow or gauntlets anytime soon as Marvel’s live-action Luke Cage, but we’re quite certain that Richards’ ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ character will be revisited in the future. Assuming Richards doesn’t end up joining the cast outright as a series regular before long, let’s see what he does as a superpowered team leader of his own!

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ can have their cases of the week, but Richards can satisfy our need for weekly super-heroics. If nothing else, he could always change his name, move to New York City, and start some kind of heroic hiring business, running it with a fist of iron, right? Right?

6

The Stan Lee Chronicles

Madcap Uatu the Watcher theories pop up with every subsequent Stan Lee appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so why not run with it? Let’s give Marvel legend Stan Lee his own anthology series to tell different stories across the Marvel Universe every week, ‘Twilight Zone’ style! We’ve no doubt that hundreds of worthy Marvel characters will have fallen through the cracks by the time ‘The Avengers’ franchise and ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ wrap up, so let’s get the main man himself to do what he does best, and tell us stories of Marvel legend!

7

Nova Corps

This one could prove a bit tricky, as our collective knowledge of the MCU’s Nova Corps stems only from what we’ve seen of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ in both Comic-Con footage and costuming. We know the Nova Corps will act as an alien police force of sorts, with John C. Reilly and Glenn Close in leadership positions, but a Nova Corps spinoff might be our best bet for future ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ alien madness. We don’t yet know if James Gunn’s outer-space epic will prove worthy enough of a sequel, or how the team will factor into Marvel’s Phase 3, so why not get the jump on Marvel’s interstellar endgame with a mad sci-fi procedural of space cops?

8

War Machine

Much as we love Don Cheadle’s take on Rhodey, we can’t deny that the character has been given a bit of short shrift in recent films. Not only was James Rhodes absent even in mention in ‘The Avengers’ (“Hey, team, we could use another guy in a murder suit, right?”), but much of the character’s ‘Iron Man 3’ presence was left to being incapacitated. Don’s ‘House of Lies’ commitment would make a ‘War Machine’ series difficult, but how better to get a budget-friendly and TV-accessible Iron Man figure? Keep the US Government angle, and we could have a very unique twist on the war thriller.

9

Loki

Whether or not the internet really believes a petition will force Marvel to make a feature film highlighting Tom Hiddleston’s breakout Asgardian god of mischief, there can be no doubt that the company would be wise to find a new platform for the character. Loki would make for a fine antihero with enough of a twist to keep things interesting and make for some incredible crossover potential with ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ in the future. Seriously, how much would you pay to see Tom Hiddleston square off with Coulson just one more time?

10

Hulk

Really, a potential ‘Hulk’ series would have to be the cream of the crop, considering the multiple attempts in recent years to return the character to TV, and the lack of feature development for our favorite jolly green shawarma-gobbling giant. We’re not saying Mark Ruffalo has to go back to the classic Bill Bixby drama of sad hitchhiking, but the ‘Hulk’ world and its peripheral characters have barely been explored by the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Imagine guest stars like ‘Modern Family’'s Ty Burrell reprising the role of Leonard Samson, or Tim Roth as a de-monstrified Emil Blonsky, hell, we could even throw in the young Jack McGee! Naturally, budgetary concerns would mark Hulk’s biggest obstacle to ending up on the small screen, but Mark Ruffalo’s well-received take on Bruce Banner would go a long way toward evening the scales.
