Sounds like Michael Crichton’s about to have another moment. With two more Jurassic World movies coming out in the next few years, plus the success of HBO’s Westworld, Crichton has snuck back into the spotlight. The next adaptation of his work will be somewhat smaller in scale, as the director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and the producer of both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World are teaming up to adapt Crichton’s posthumously published novel Micro.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joachim Ronning, one of the co-directors of Pirates 5, is currently in negotiations to direct the techno-thriller for Amblin Entertainment, and Frank Marshall is on board to produce. Micro is basically Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but with science, as seven grad students are shrunk down to minuscule size and have to use their knowledge of their respective fields to survive the Hawaiian rainforest and bring an evil corporation to justice. I’ve read it, and I can say definitively that it’s great. Micro spent 20 weeks on the bestseller list when it was published, and Amblin acquired the rights back in 2015.

This definitely indicates that Amblin is pleased with Ronning’s work on Pirates 5, which hits theaters this summer. And it also indicates that movies about groups of scientists out in the rainforest are also about to have a moment, as Alex Garland’s Annihilation, about four female scientists on an expedition into an environment that’s gone very weird, to say the least (and also based on a book by Jeff VanderMeer), comes out sometime this year.
