Microsoft Buys Xbone Domain Despite Feelings About Nickname

The internet already decided the official Xbox One nickname was going to be "Xbone," so instead of fighting the trend, Microsoft decided to embrace it by buying up the website domain.

According to Fusible, Microsoft recently purchased the domain name "Xbone.com." It was already in the hands of a mysterious owner, but it looks like Microsoft may have paid said registrant for the rights to the site.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, given how little Microsoft actually likes the nickname bestowed upon its next-gen console. Major Nelson already spoke out against "Xbone" on NeoGAF, where he was more than happy to share his disappointment in the anointed name. "I don't like it," Nelson stated on the forums. "[It] disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it's cheeky but I don't care for it myself."

Now, just because Microsoft bought the domain doesn't mean it ever intends to use it. It just means nobody else can. Maybe it's for the best, but don't be surprised when you type "Xbone.com" in one day to have it redirect you to the official Xbox One page.
