Originally running from 1998 through 2002, Celebrity Deathmatch was an MTV staple, pitting various famous faces from various branches of the entertainment industry against each other in brutal fights to the death (all of them rendered in stop–motion animation). Following its cancellation, the show was revived once more in 2005, this time on MTV2, before being cancelled again in 2007. Now, it looks like the network is returning to that bloody claymation well once more. Celebrity Deathmatch will soon make a grand return to MTV2.

The news comes to us via The Hollywood Reporter, who report that original series creator Eric Fogel is back on board as well. Specific details aren’t specified, but it’s hard to imagine the new incarnation straying far from the formula laid down by the two previous versions. Two celebrities (often with some kind of real life rivalry) will enter the ring, exchange pop culture references, and pummel each other into bloody pulps. Only one of them will leave the ring alive.

The humor on Celebrity Deathmatch was always lowest common denominator, but the appeal for the intended audience of high school students and stoners is fairly obvious. This is your chance to watch the celebrities who annoy you literally rip each other limb from limb! In the age of the Kanye West and and Taylor Swift, a new Celebrity Deathmatch should thrive.

No premiere date has been set for the show, but we imagine we’ll be hearing more about it soon. And surely it will retain that goofy clay style. There is no way a concept this thin would work as well if it was CG animated.
