MTV will take a big swing next week with its epic adaptation of Terry Brooks’ The Shannara Chronicles, the network’s first stab at high fantasy and sci-fi. We’ve seen a few trailers to boot, but before the January 5 premiere, watch an extended sneak peek from the landmark new series.

For those unfamiliar with the 25-book franchise that began in 1977, the Shannara series follows the titular family hundreds of years after the destruction of our own civilization, whose magical powers “perpetually reshape the future of the world.” Jon Favreau’s adaptation (with Smallville producers Al Gough and Miles Millar at the helm) starts with the chronologically second novel, The Elfstones of Shannara, as its first season.

Syfy Australia also released the first extended sneak peek clip, while you can find additional spots below:

MTV’s Shannara Chronicles features among its cast Poppy Drayton as Elven princess Amberle, Arrow alum Austin Butler and Manu Bennett as Wil Ohmsford and the Druid Allanon, Ivana Baquero as Eretria, John Rhys-Davies as King Eventine, Brooke Williams as Catania, Marcus Vanco as Bandon, Daniel MacPherson as Arion, Aaron Jakubenko as Ander, and Dexter alum James Remar as Cephalo.

MTV’s Shannara Chronicles will premiere January 5, so take a look at the trailers above, and see what you think of the long-gestating fantasy adaptation.
