Interviewing serial killers takes special nerve, and David Fincher and Charlize Theron will test yours with Netflix’s Mindhunter. See for yourself with a new sneak peek from the Jonathan Groff series that bears a very … uh, intimate title.

Ahead of its October 13 premiere, the series released a not-quite-clip, not-quite-trailer preview, as stars Holt McCallanay and Jonathan Groff prepare for the latter’s first meeting with an intimidating killer. Suffice to say, a firearm probably isn’t going to cut it. So reads the Netflix synopsis:

An agent in the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit develops profiling techniques as he pursues notorious serial killers and rapists.

MINDHUNTER features Jonathan Groff (Looking), Holt McCallanay (Sully), Anna Torv (Fringe) and Hannah Gross (Unless). The series is directed by David Fincher (Gone Girl, The Social Network, Zodiac), Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), Tobias Lindholm (A War, A Hijacking) and Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror, U Want Me 2 Kill Him?). Fincher, Joshua Donen (Gone Girl, The Quick and the Dead) Charlize Theron (Girlboss, Hatfields & McCoys) and Cean Chaffin (Gone Girl, Fight Club) are Executive Producers.

The series is adapted from John Douglas and Mark Olshanker’s 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, which Theron held the rights to. The Road scribe Joe Penhall wrote the script, with Fincher and Theron executive producing, and Fincher directing the first two episodes. The book itself follows Douglas’ decades developing criminal profiling techniques and tracking down serial killers for the FBI.

In the meantime, watch the first Mindhunter trailer below, and stay tuned.
