New ‘Batman v Superman’ TV Spots Bring the War to Us

Warner Bros.

I honestly cannot believe they’re pronouncing that title “Batman Vee Superman.” When they announced that DC’s mega-hero tussle would be called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I assumed it was just quirky branding, and I haven’t met a single person who didn’t call it “Batman Versus Superman” in casual conversation.

Obviously I didn’t meet director Zack Snyder, who, in a recently released clip, explicitly refers to his latest superhero movie as Batman Vee Superman. I know Snyder’s an Alan Moore fan, but this is taking things a little too far.

That said, in these two new TV spots, Batman and Superman vee the hell out of each other. Each one spotlights one half of the titular duo. In the first, Superman (Henry Cavill) is convinced that the “Bat-vigilante” lurking in Gotham City is really a “one-man reign of terror.” Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) tells him to slow his super-roll, but Clark Kent isn’t about to sit idly by and let a weirdo in a bat costume terrorize the planet. Doesn’t Batman know that’s Superman’s job?

Actually he does, as the Bat-centric TV spot shows. Batman (Ben Affleck) hates what happened to Metropolis in Man of Steel, and he says to Alfred (Jeremy Irons) that if there’s even a 1 percent chance that this dude might actually wipe out all of humanity with the power he wields, then he “has to destroy him.” Holy narratively unmotivated overreaction, Batman!

Surely, this will all be explained in the movie (and is probably some result of the machinations of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor), but while I get where both of these dudes are coming from (I feel you Batfleck, I hated Man of Steel too), I’m not quite sure why, as heroes, they don’t at least try to hash this ideological dispute out rather than, y’know, trying to kill each other. Again, there’s probably an in-story reason why they can’t. But the meta reason — because if Superman and Batman decided to talk and hug it out instead of fighting it wouldn’t be much of an action movie — looms very large over all of this. Batman Vee Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25.
