If you were a kid in the ’90s, chances are you were a fan of at least one of Nickelodeon’s classic animated shows. Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold!, Doug — even teenagers and some parents (the cool ones) could appreciate the clever mix of comedic sensibilities on display. It was truly the heyday of Nickelodeon’s animated offerings, and now the company is bringing them all back, as all things for which we feel pangs of nostalgia must inevitably return.

A few days ago rumors began circulating that Nickelodeon was planning on reviving their classic ’90s cartoons in some way, shape or form, and today the Tracking Board reveals exactly what the company is planning. Nickelodeon is partnering with Paramount for a new animation / live-action hybrid film that will feature characters from beloved animated shows like Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold!, Angry Beavers, Rocko’s Modern Life and more (Doug? Cat Dog? STICK STICKLEY?!) crossing over in one epic movie adventure.

Tentatively titled NICKTOONS, the movie would allow all of your favorite animated characters to join forces Avengers-style. These nostalgia-driven concepts tend to be ill-conceived attempts for easy money, as we often confuse our affection for films and TV shows of the past for a genuine desire to see them return with sequels and revivals. But Nickelodeon’s plan actually sounds kind of…fun?

That is, it could be fun with the right talent involved. Nickelodeon is currently working on securing the rights to each property and seeking the perfect writer to revive the characters without modernizing them — it’s going to take some real work to put the characters from these different worlds under one roof without losing their individuality, but if the company succeeds, this could be one of the more exciting animated films on the horizon.
