One of the most talked-about movies of the summer is 'Pacific Rim,' which seemed like the ultimate fanboy movie leading up to its release but has failed to light up the domestic box office (despite plenty of enthusiastic notices from movie geeks and critics alike). However, thanks to a surge in overseas box office (particularly China), the film just may end up getting a sequel, against all odds. But would you want to see it?

A sequel to 'Pacific Rim' has always been a possibility - at least from a creative standpoint. Director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have made no secret of the fact that they were cooking up ideas for 'Pacific Rim 2' even before the first film opened. But after a so-so $37 million opening weekend in the US, the film has not shown great legs; it currently stands at $86 million. Considering the budget was in the $200 million range, the film will be a big old bomb domestically no matter how you slice it.

But wait! As reported yesterday, 'Pacific Rim' opened with a very encouraging $9 million in China, signaling a massive interest there and in other international territories; it has made over $140 million overseas, and it still has a few more countries to open in. If it does indeed continue to make waves like it did in China, a sequel is not at all out of the question.
