We've seen competing asteroid pictures, competing "Friends with Benefits" films, competing destructive volcano pictures, but in 2012 we're getting competing "Bonding with your parents" movies, both within a week of each other. First comes 'The Guilt Trip' on December 19, and then 'Parental Guidance' on December 25. Now there's a new trailer for the latter.

'Parental Guidance' is definitely the more wacky looking of the two as it shows the generational changes in how people parents. And the trailer sells this like a hacky comedian: "Old parents do this, new parents do this." The film has some names (Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei), and these sort of pictures have been en vogue in previous holiday seasons, but one would think that you'd want to escape from family turmoil during the holiday season, not watch it for two hours.

Here's the synopsis:

Old school grandfather Artie, who is accustomed to calling the shots, meets his match when he and his eager-to-please wife Diane agree to babysit their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents go away for work. But when 21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane's old school methods of tough rules, lots of love and old-fashioned games, its learning to bend – and not holding your ground – that binds a family together.
