The New ‘Pee-wee’ Movie Produced by Judd Apatow Will Premiere on NetflixBritt Hayes |
For years now, Paul Reubens has teased that an all-new ‘Pee-wee’ movie is in the works, but it was only over the course of the last year that the project finally became more of a reality. With Judd Apatow’s involvement and an official script locked in, Reubens revealed that production on the film is set to begin in 2015. But don’t count on seeing Pee-wee back on the big screen—he’s heading to Netflix.
According to The Wrap, the new ‘Pee-wee’ movie is no longer set up at Universal, and will instead premiere on Netflix. Although a deal is not officially in place, a source revealed to the trade that “it moved to Netflix a gazillion months ago.” Previously, in an interview with the A.V. Club, Reubens said, “we now have such an amazing company involved, and that’s the really big announcement that hasn’t been made yet”—we now know that “amazing company” is Netflix.
Netflix has recently gotten into the film business, and will debut a sequel to ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,’ as well as new films produced by and starring Adam Sandler next year. With the service having already established itself as home to critically-acclaimed original series like ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ their move into original films seemed like the next logical step.
The ‘Pee-wee’ movie is backed by producer Judd Apatow, and has a script from Paul Rust, who previously worked on IFC’s ‘Comedy Bang! Bang!’—a show which has been influenced by Reubens’ Pee-wee Herman character and his television series. With the film set to begin production in early 2015, we might very well see the new ‘Pee-wee’ movie in 2016.
