Female-driven action movies are so hot right now. Just this year, we’ve already gotten Scarlett Johansson’s Ghost in the Shell, and we’re going to get Atomic Blonde, Wonder Woman, and Alien: Covenant pretty soon. Also riding this action lady wave is Taken director Pierre Morel, who has announced that his next film, which was up for bidding ahead of Cannes, will feature a mother who goes after the people who took her child away from her. So, Taken, basically.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Morel’s new movie Peppermint was just acquired by Lakeshore Entertainment, the studio known for such gems as the Cranks, the Underworlds, and I, Frankenstein. So, okay. We know pretty much how this one is going to go.

Here’s THR’s synopsis of the plot:

Peppermint is a revenge story centering on a young mother who finds herself with nothing to lose, and is now going to take from her rivals the very life they stole from her.

Does that mean they... killed her kid? That seems really dark, but maybe Morel could have it work. He did, after all, launch a huge franchise and an even huger meme. Peppermint has been fast-tracked and is planned for a fall 2017 production start, and has been described as “a female John Wick.” Is Female John Wick the new Comic Book Superhero Movie? Only time will tell. At least this means that more women are getting action roles these days.
