A few months back we got our first look at ‘Predestination,’ an upcoming sci-fi film that re-teams Ethan Hawke with the directors of ‘Daybreakers.’ In case you’d forgotten about this intriguing movie, we’ve got a brand new trailer and some good news: the film is finally hitting theaters this January after garnering some positive buzz on the festival circuit this year.

Watching the trailer, you’ll quickly jump to make the obvious comparisons to something like ‘Minority Report,’ but instead of using that film’s pre-cog concept, this one replaces it with time travel, as Hawke plays what’s called a “Temporal Agent,” who travels through time in an effort to ensure he’ll always be able to catch his man. It’s perhaps not what you’re expecting. Here’s the official synopsis:

Based on the short story ‘All You Zombies’ by Robert A. Heinlein, PREDESTINATION chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensure the continuation of his law enforcement career. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must recruit his younger self while pursuing the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.

So it’s not so much about stopping crimes before they happen, as changing the past can have devastating effects on the future, as all good time travel stories have taught us—although, we assume we’ll see some of that explored in this story as well. The film co-stars Noah Taylor of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and newcomer Sarah Snook, and hits theaters on January 9.
