Pretty Woman

The 1990 film ‘Pretty Woman’ followed the story of prostitute Vivian, who is picked up by rich businessman Edward to be his escort for an entire week, but along the way the pair develop feelings for each other and their relationship goes from strictly business to something much more meaningful. Originally planned as a dark drama, the film was transformed into a romantic comedy and made Julia Roberts into the leading lady she is today. 24 years later, we revisit the cast and see what they’re up to now.

Then: Julia Roberts was only 21 and still a virtually unknown actress, having only been nominated for an Oscar for her performance in ‘Steel Magnolias’ when she was cast as feisty, down and out prostitute Vivian Ward. Vivian is hired by Edward to be his escort to business functions for an entire week in Los Angeles and the pair fall in love.

The casting process was difficult, with director Garry Marshall originally wanting actresses Karen Allen and Mary Steenburgen for the role. Meg Ryan, Molly Ringwald, and Michelle Pfeiffer all turned down the part, while actresses like Winona Ryder and Jennifer Connelly were dismissed for being too young.

Now: Roberts went on to become known as America’s Sweetheart, and even appeared in a film called ‘America’s Sweethearts.’ She reunited with Richard Gere for the 1999 film ‘Runaway Bride,’ and is known best for roles in films like ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding,’ ‘Erin Brockovich’ (for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress), and ‘Eat Pray Love.’ More recently she’s appeared in the films ‘Larry Crowne,’ ‘Mirror, Mirror,’ and 2013′s ‘August: Osage County,’ which is garnering awards buzz. She can be seen next in Ryan Murphy’s HBO film ‘The Normal Heart’ with Mark Ruffalo and Taylor Kitsch.

Richard Gere, Edward Lewis

Then: Casting for the role of wealthy businessman Edward Lewis was similarly difficult. Director Garry Marshall initially considered ‘Superman’ star Christopher Reeve, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Denzel Washington. Al Pacino went so far as to audition with Julia Roberts, but ultimately rejected a role in the film. Richard Gere, star of ‘American Gigolo’ and ‘An Officer and a Gentleman,’ eventually won the part.

Now: Nine years later, Gere reunited with Roberts for the romantic comedy ‘Runaway Bride,’ and since then has appeared in films like ‘Autumn in New York,’ ‘Unfaithful,’ ‘I’m Not There,’ and ‘Amelia.’ In 2002, he won a Golden Globe award for his performance in ‘Chicago.’ He’s continued to work steadily in recent years, starring in ‘Brooklyn’s Finest,’ ‘Arbitrage,’ and in the anthology comedy ‘Movie 43.’

Jason Alexander, Philip Stuckey

Then: ‘Seinfeld’ star Jason Alexander played Philip Stuckey, Edward’s jerky lawyer who learns that Vivian is a prostitute and proceeds to proposition her, causing Edward to realize his feelings for Vivian are becoming more serious.

Now: Alexander played George Costanza on ‘Seinfeld’ until the show ended its run in 1998. He reunited with his co-stars and creator Larry David on David’s HBO show ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ for a handful of episodes, and has appeared on the shows ‘Harry’s Law,’ ‘Two and a Half Men,’ and ‘Community.’ He has also directed episodes of ‘Mike and Molly’ and ‘Franklin and Bash,’ and appears in the upcoming film ‘Heat.’

Laura San Giacomo, Kit De Luca

Then: Laura San Giacomo was an up and coming young actress who was cast in the role of Kit De Luca, Vivan’s roommate and fellow prostitute, who spends all their rent money on drugs. San Giacomo had previously appeared in the film ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape.’

Now: San Giacomo went on to star on the long-running sitcom ‘Just Shoot Me,’ and starred on the drama series ‘Saving Grace.’ Since that show ended in 2010, she has made guest appearances on ‘In Plain Sight,’ ‘Medium,’ ‘Hot in Cleveland,’ and ‘The Mentalist,’ and has had supporting roles in the films ‘Haywire’ and ‘Least Among Saints.’

Alex Hyde-White, David Morse

Then: Alex Hyde-White played David Morse, the grandson of John Morse, whose company Edward wishes to purchase and dismantle. Hyde-White had previously appeared in the original ‘Battlestar Galactica’ series and in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.’

Now: Hyde-White has appeared in the films ‘Catch Me if You Can,’ ‘The Adventures of Tintin,’ and ‘Game Change,’ and guest-starred on the shows ‘Dexter’ and ‘The Mentalist.’ He runs his own film production company, TMG, and has produced the films ‘Three Days of Hamlet,’ which he also directed, and ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ (not to be confused with the similarly-titled Will Smith film). In addition, he also runs the audiobook production company Punch Audio.

Amy Yasbeck, Elizabeth Stuckey

Then: Amy Yasbeck played Elizabeth Stuckey, the sarcastic and snobby wife of Edward’s lawyer, Philip. Yasbeck had previously been known for her roles on shows like ‘Days of Our Lives,’ ‘Dallas,’ and ‘Magnum, P.I.’

Now: Yasbeck went on to appear in the ‘Problem Child’ films where she met husband John Ritter. She also appeared in the comedies ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights,’ ‘Dracula: Dead and Loving It,’ and ‘The Odd Couple II.’ She had a role on the 90s sitcom ‘Wings,’ and reunited with Laura San Giacomo for an episode of ‘Just Shoot Me.’ Her husband, Ritter, sadly passed away in 2003, and Yasbeck hasn’t acted much since, though she’s recently guest-starred on episodes of ‘Hot in Cleveland’ and ‘Modern Family.’

Hector Elizondo, Barney Thompson

Then: Hector Elizondo played Barney Thompson, the hotel manager who eventually takes a shine to Vivian and helps her buy a cocktail dress and learn proper manners. Elizondo had previously appeared with Richard Gere in ‘American Gigolo.’

Now: Elizondo went on to star in the films ‘Beverly Hills Cop 3′ and ‘The Other Sister,’ and reunited with both Gere and Roberts for ‘Runaway Bride.’ In 2001, he helped another young lady with a makeover when he co-starred with Anne Hathaway in ‘The Princess Diaries,’ and in recent years he’s appeared in the films ‘Georgia Rule,’ ‘Valentine’s Day,’ and ‘New Year’s Eve.’
