See the Cast of ‘The Princess Bride’ Then and Now

Released in 1987, 'The Princess Bride' (based on the novel of the same name by William Goldman) became an instant classic with its clever and hilarious spin on fairy tales. The film is presented as a story told to a sick boy by his grandpa, about a princess named Buttercup, the scheme to have her kidnapped and murdered, and the stable boy who becomes her true prince. Twenty-five years later, we take a look back at the cast of one of the funniest films of all time and see where they are now.

Cary Elwes, Westley/Dread Pirate Roberts

Then: Cary Elwes became a household name with his role in 'The Princess Bride' -- he played Westley, a farmboy and love interest for Princess Buttercup.

Now: Elwes is also well-known for roles in the spoof films 'Hot Shots!' and 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights.' He recently appeared in 'The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure' and Lifetime's 'The Anna Nicole Story.'

Robin Wright, Princess Buttercup

Then: Though Uma Thurman auditioned for the part and Whoopi Goldberg campaigned hard for it, the role of Princess Buttercup went to Robin Wright, who had previously starred in the soap opera 'Santa Barbara.'

Now: Wright recently appeared in David Fincher's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,' as well as his Netflix original series, 'House of Cards.' She can be seen next in 'The Congress.'

Christopher Guest, Count Tyrone Rugen

Then: Christopher Guest played the evil Count Tyrone Rugen, a man with six fingers. Guest had previously worked with 'Princess Bride' director Rob Reiner on 'This is Spinal Tap,' which Guest starred in and wrote.

Now: Guest is known for his mockumentary-style films that he writes, directs, produces, and stars in, such as 'Best in Show' and 'A Mighty Wind.' The first season of 'Family Tree,' his series on HBO, recently concluded -- the show stars Chris O'Dowd and several actors who have appeared in Guest's films. Guest is married to Jamie Lee Curtis, and the pair wed at the home of 'Princess Bride' and 'Spinal Tap' director Rob Reiner.

Mandy Patinkin, Inigo Montoya

Then: Mandy Patinkin starred as Inigo Montoya, a Spaniard who is skilled with a sword and memorably seeks revenge on Count Rugen for the murder of his father. Patinkin was previously nominated for a Golden Globe for his acting in 'Yentl' opposite Barbra Streisand.

Now:  Patinkin currently plays the role of Saul on the Showtime drama series 'Homeland,' and still considers his role in 'The Princess Bride' to be his personal favorite. The actor has also had recurring roles on 'Dead Like Me' and 'Criminal Minds.'

Wallace Shawn, Vizzini

Then: Wallace Shawn, star of 'All That Jazz' and 'My Dinner with Andre,' played Vizzini, a Sicilian criminal mastermind (so he says) who employs Inigo Montoya.

Now: Shawn recently reunited with his 'Clueless' director Amy Heckerling for the vampire comedy 'Vamps,' and is well-known as the voice of T-Rex in the 'Toy Story' films. He also recently appeared in the film 'Admission' and on the TV shows 'The Good Wife' and 'Adventure Time.'

Billy Crystal, Miracle Max

Then: Comedian Billy Crystal played Miracle Max, the last miracle worker in the fictional land of Florin, who saves Westley's life so they can get revenge on the evil Prince Humperdinck. Director Rob Reiner found Crystal so funny that he had to step away from the camera during his scenes so he didn't disrupt filming with his own laughter. Mandy Patinkin has said that the only injury he sustained on set was a busted rib due to stifling his laughter during scenes with Crystal.

Now: Crystal has had roles in films like 'When Harry Met Sally' (also directed by Rob Reiner) and 'City Slickers,' and recently reprised his role as Mike Wazowski in Pixar's 'Monsters University.' He has hosted the prestigious Academy Awards nine times, making him second only to Bob Hope, who hosted the event a record 18 times.

Carol Kane, Valerie

Then: Carol Kane, star of 'Annie Hall' and 'Taxi,' played Valerie, Miracle Max's wife.

Now: Kane is probably known best for her role in the classic Bill Murray comedy 'Scrooged,' and has also appeared in the recent films 'Sleepwalk with Me' and 'Thanks for Sharing,' as well as an episode of the HBO series 'Girls.' Kane is also a stage actress, and played the role of Madame Morrible in various Broadway productions of 'Wicked' from 2005 to 2009.

Fred Savage, The Grandson

Then: Fred Savage, star of 'The Boy Who Could Fly,' played The Grandson, a sick kid whose grandfather (Peter Falk) reads him a bedtime story about the adventures of Princess Buttercup and Westley.

Now: Savage is best known for playing Kevin Arnold on 'The Wonder Years,' and appearing in the films 'Little Monsters' and 'The Wizard.' He is the older brother of 'Boy Meets World' star Ben Savage. These days, Fred Savage works behind the camera, and has directed episodes of 'Modern Family,' 'Happy Endings,' '2 Broke Girls,' and 'Party Down' -- the latter of which he also produced.
