Following the record-breaking success of Deadpool, Fox is officially moving ahead with their New Mutants spinoff with Josh Boone set to direct based on a script he’s co-writing with Knate Gwaltney. The first cast and character details have reportedly arrived, with at least one X-Men: Apocalypse newcomer joining the fray alongside Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and The Witch breakout Anya Taylor-Joy.

HitFix has offered the first major details on New Mutants, which will bring Alexandra Shipp’s Storm over from X-Men: Apocalypse along with James McAvoy’s Professor Charles Xavier, the latter of whom is said to have an important role.

As for characters not previously introduced in the X-Men universe, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will play Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, a shapeshifter who takes the form of a werewolf. Anya Taylor-Joy, the breakout star of indie horror hit The Witch, will play Ilya Rasputin, aka Magik. In a recent interview, producer Simon Kinberg played coy about the character’s involvement in New Mutants, making her inclusion in the film seem fairly obvious.

Other team members will reportedly include Sunspot, Mirage and Cannonball — the latter of which is interesting as this is a mutant included in concept art for the X-Force movie lineup. Either those particular plans may have changed since Jeff Wadlow was originally tapped to write the script back in 2013 (this is likely), or there are plans to connect New Mutants to X-Force in some capacity. (Let’s not forget Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s costume in Deadpool, which was based on the New Mutants design.)

Whew. That’s a lot of interesting info. Although Fox has not yet set a release date for New Mutants, they did recently date a mystery Marvel project for August 2017. That seems a bit too soon, given that Boone is also slated to direct Revival, based on the Stephen King sci-fi horror novel. But now that casting has already begun, it’s likely we’ll see New Mutants hit the big screen sooner rather than later.
