The power of the internet turned Rick and Morty’s obscure gag about discontinued McDonald’s sauce into an epic, inter-dimensional quest involving the fast-food chain’s top chef, and may soon empty your wallet. One of the four special bottles created for the series is retailing on eBay for thousands of dollars.

It started last week with Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland sharing news that McDonald’s finally recreated the Mulan-themed Szechuan dipping sauce from 1998, sending their offices a bottle jokingly retrieved from an alternate dimension. Three other suitcases of the sauce were sent to select fans, and Business Insider reports one opted to auction his off over eBay, with at least 20% of the proceeds going to charity:

Those proceeds are no joke, by the way – as of publishing, the current bid is up to $7,500 (edit: now at least $11,600), with DJ “deadmau5” apparently one of the top bidders. Lest you think Rick and Morty fans bidding for the sauce is a one-off phenomenon, a prior auction for mere packets of the stuff soared as high as $14,700.

So, will McDonald’s step in and stop the madness with a full-fledged return of the sauce, perhaps tied to the live-action Mulan? Said one representative:

For now, only a limited amount of Szechuan Sauce got through from the always-1998 dimension. Who knows where space-time will take us because when our customers speak, we listen.

In the meantime, Rick and Morty Season 3 continues on Sunday nights, with nary a mention of the Szechuan sauce since its April Fools premiere.
