Despite the fact that Blade Runner 2049 is only the second movie in this franchise - can we call it a franchise if there’s only two movies? I’m asking for a friend - you’ll be completely forgiven if you’ve lost the thread on the events leading up to this film. Not only will the time jump between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 probably leave a few fans in the dust, the first film was never particularly forthcoming with its own mythology, asking fans to piece together some of the political and technological events that led to the replicant revolution. Like the best science fiction, it was a movie that contained multitudes, even if it wasn’t always compelled to share them.

Thankfully, Warner Bros. knows it’s playing in the deep end of the pool and has put together a website to help fill in some of those blanks. Scroll through the ‘Road to 2049‘ website and you’ll be treated to an abbreviated history of the entire Blade Runner saga, from a bloody mutiny in 2018 that led to replicants being banned on Earth to the 2023 prohibition of replicant production and beyond. In short, ‘Road to 2049‘ is a perfect synopsis of everything you need to know before catching the sequel this fall. Sure, Blade Runner 2049 will undoubtedly open with some kind of crawl filling in the most rudimentary of the blanks, but don’t you want to be the braniac in your group who knows the ins and outs of the Blade Runner universe? That’s what I thought.

Here’s the full pot synopsis for Blade Runner 2049:

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
