In 1987, director Paul Verhoeven unleashed 'RoboCop,' a sci-fi action flick and darkly comic satire starring Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, a cop who is murdered and brought back to life by the corporation OmniCorp to protect and serve as the cyborg known as RoboCop. After 26 years, two sequels, and a remake on the way, we take a look back at the cast of the original film and see where they are now.

Then: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rutger Hauer were early favorites to play RoboCop, but the actors were both too large to be able to move adequately in the bulky suit. Peter Weller was selected because of his expressive face -- particularly his mouth, which would be the only visible portion for most of his time in the suit -- and his thin frame, which allowed him to move more easily in the suit.

Now: Weller reprised the role of Murphy for 'RoboCop 2' and recently took on another iconic role as the voice of Batman in the animated 'The Dark Knight Returns' film. He also appeared in 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' Recently, he's been doing more work behind the camera, starring in and directing episodes of 'Longmire' and 'Sons of Anarchy.'

Then: Nancy Allen played Officer Anne Lewis, Murphy's partner who sticks by his side, even after he becomes RoboCop. 'Remington Steele' star Stephanie Zimbalist was originally attached to play Lewis when her show was canceled. When NBC optioned the show again, however, she had to drop out, and the role went to Allen, who had previously starred in 'Carrie.'

Now: Allen reprised her role in 'RoboCop 2' and 'RoboCop 3,' and appeared in the films 'Out of Sight' and 'Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return.' She is the executive director of the weSPARK Cancer Support Center.

Then: Ronny Cox was often cast as kind fatherly figures, so director Verhoeven chose him for the role of the villainous OCP President Dick Jones.

Now: Cox has appeared in the films 'Total Recall,' 'Deep Blue Sea' and 'Imagine That,' and like his 'RoboCop' co-star Peter Weller, Cox also guest-starred on the Showtime series 'Dexter.' The actor is also an accomplished singer-songwriter and has released nine albums, including 2012's 'Ronny, Rad and Karen.'

Then: As with Cox, Verhoeven also wanted to cast Kurtwood Smith to play against type -- Smith often played intellectual roles, and in 'RoboCop' he plays the crimelord Clarence Boddicker.

Now: Smith is well-known for playing Red Foreman on the sitcom 'That '70s Show,' and has appeared in the recent films 'Hitchcock' and 'Turbo.' He has lent his voice to the animated series 'Beware the Batman' and 'Transformers: Prime.'

Miguel Ferrer, OCP Executive Robert "Bob" Morton

Then: Miguel Ferrer played Bob Morton, an OCP exec with good intentions who lets his greed and desire to prove himself better than his superiors cloud his judgment.

Now: Ferrer went on to star in 'Twin Peaks' and the prequel film, 'Fire Walk with Me.' He recently starred in another film about a hero in a metal suit: in 'Iron Man 3,' Ferrer played Vice President Rodriguez. He also has a small role in the upcoming 'RoboCop' remake.

Then: Paul McCrane played Emil Antonowsky, one of Clarence's henchmen.

Now: McCrane played Dr. Robert Romano on 'ER' from 1997 to 2008, and has also appeared on the shows 'Harry's Law' (for which he won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series) and 'Major Crimes.' McCrane also works behind the camera and has directed episodes of 'Harry's Law,' 'ER' and 'Nashville.'

Then: Ray Wise played Leon Nash, another one of Clarence's henchmen.

Now: Wise, like Ferrer, also went on to star on 'Twin Peaks.' The eclectic actor has recently appeared on the shows 'Mad Men,' 'How I Met Your Mother' and the Adult Swim series 'Newsreaders.' His recent film credits include 'Big Ass Spider' and 'Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie.'
