The box office results for Independence Day: Resurgence may not be in yet, but that hasn’t prevented director Roland Emmerich from talking sequels. According to a recent interview with Empire (via /Film), Emmerich has plans to send Earth’s most Goldblum-y defenders out among the stars.

The next one will be an intergalactic journey. It’ll be [set] maybe a year or two later, not 20 years [on]. I want to maintain this group of people, especially the young characters, and Jeff [Goldblum] and Brent [Spiner] will take part in it. It’ll be fun to keep that group together.

If a third Independence Day gets the green light, Emmerich certainly has the right idea to move the franchise out into space. We have now spent two movies watching landmarks across the world get blown up, and frankly, audiences might have hit their point of fatigue with apocalyptic disaster stories. Putting Jeff Goldblum et al. on the offensive opens the door to some fun visuals of space travel. Think Interstellar or Stargate meets ... well, meets Independence Day, I guess.

Of course, this may all be a moot point if Independence Day: Resurgence doesn’t pick up over the weekend. Early on Saturday, Deadline reported that the film was not doing particularly well in domestic markets, finishing far behind Pixar’s Finding Dory in its second week. As the article suggests, if the third Independence Day wants to successfully travel to different planets, its predecessor must first successfully travel to different countries. You can bet that Emmerich and his crew are watching the foreign markets very closely indeed.
