See the Cast of ‘The Shining’ Then and Now

The Shining
Warner Bros.

In 1980, visionary director Stanley Kubrick released ‘The Shining,’ a psychological horror film based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. ‘The Shining’ follows writer Jack Torrance as he takes his family up to an isolated hotel to work on completing his novel. While there, his son discovers he has psychic powers, and Jack himself begins a descent into murderous madness. It’s been 33 years since the film first terrified audiences, so join us as we revisit the cast of the film and see what they’re up to now.

Then: Jack Nicholson was Kubrick’s first choice for the role of author and father Jack Torrance. Other actors considered included Robert De Niro, Robin Williams and Harrison Ford, though none of them were approved by Stephen King. Nicholson had previously won the Academy Award for Best Actor for ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.’

Now: Nicholson had also won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in ‘As Good as It Gets,’ and in recent years has appeared in ‘The Departed,’ ‘The Bucket List’ and ‘How Do You Know,’ the latter of which was released in 2010. Nicholson has not appeared in a film since, and has recently been the subject of retirement rumors. However, according to him, he’s not retired … he’s just “not driven” to make movies like he once was.

Shelley Duvall, Wendy Torrance

Then: In Stephen King’s novel, the author envisions Wendy as a privileged, sheltered, former cheerleader type. Nicholson suggested Jessica Lange for the part, but Kubrick had made some changes to the story and saw Wendy as a more emotionally fragile character. He cast Shelley Duvall, going against Stephen King’s wishes.

Now: Duvall went on to appear in the films ‘Time Bandits’ and ‘Roxanne,’ and hosted the Showtime series ‘Faerie Tale Theatre’ in the ’80s. In the ’90s, she starred in ‘RocketMan’ and ‘Home Fries,’ but hasn’t appeared in a film since 2002′s ‘Manna from Heaven.’ Duvall is currently retired and living in a small town in Texas with six children.

Danny Lloyd, Danny Torrance

Then: Over 5,000 kids auditioned for the role of Danny Torrance, the young boy with psychic abilities. Danny Lloyd was cast, and the idea for Danny Torrance to move his finger while speaking as “Tony” was Lloyd’s own. Kubrick was very protective of Lloyd, and told the young boy that they were shooting a drama movie, often shielding him from the violence and blood. It wasn’t until Lloyd was a teenager that he saw the actual film.

Now: Lloyd only appeared in one more film, a 1982 TV movie called ‘Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy.’ In his first interview since childhood, he revealed to New York Daily News that, although he wanted to continue acting, he kept missing out on parts. He subsequently retired from the profession and is currently a biology teacher at a community college in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Joe Turkel, Lloyd the Bartender

Then: Joe Turkel, who previously worked with Kubrick on ‘The Killing’ and ‘Paths of Glory,’ played Joe, the haunting bartender.

Now: Turkel went on to star in ‘Blade Runner’ as Dr. Eldon Tyrell, and appeared in episodes of ‘Miami Vice’ and ‘Tales from the Darkside.’ His last credited appearance was in a 1998 episode of ‘Boy Meets World.’

Barry Dennen, Bill Watson

Then: Barry Dennen, a stage actor known for his roles in ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar,’ portrayed Bill Watson, the summer caretaker of the Overlook Hotel.

Now: Dennen has appeared in the films ‘Titanic’ and ‘Trading Places,’ and has done voice work for the animated shows ‘Batman: The Animated Series,’ ‘DuckTales’ and ‘Animaniacs.’

Lisa and Louise Burns, The Grady Girls

Warner Bros./VH1

Then: Lisa and Louise Burns played the sinister and spooky Grady girls, who try to lure Danny to “play” with them.

Now: The sisters have not appeared in a film since ‘The Shining,’ and chose instead to focus on their academic careers. Lisa has a degree in literature and language, while Louise is a microbiologist.
