Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts announced today that she’ll head out on a smurfin’ safari as a cast member in the upcoming feature Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Bonus lede: Julia Roberts staked her smurf turf earlier today with the announcement that she’s joining the cast of Smurfs: The Lost Village.

One more for good measure: Julia Roberts is in for the smurfing of a lifetime as the newest addition to the cast of Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Anyway, yeah, Julia Roberts will appear in the film due for release on April 17, itself an all-animation reboot unrelated to the recent live-action/animation fusions from Sony. Roberts will assay the role of SmurfWillow, a newcomer to Smurf Village that the People item breaking this exclusive describes as “wise.”

She joins a voice cast that already includes such heavy hitters as human grizzly bear Mandy Patinkin (the sage Papa Smurf), pop songstress Demi Lovato (heroine Smurfette), as well as TV comedic talents Danny Pudi, Rainn Wilson, and Jack McBrayer. In the new film, Smurfette uses a map found in the Forbidden Forest to guide her on an adventure in search of the fabled Lost Village, with constant foe Gargamel hot on her tiny blue heels. How SmurfWillow figures into this all — apart from disrupting the careful sexual equilibrium of the smurf community, as detailed in Donnie Darko — has yet to be revealed. Below, take a gander at the international trailer for the upcoming film and ponder how an animated film can suddenly take on a new cast member four months ahead of release.
