Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn’t even out yet and we already know that everyone in the world is going to want their own BB-8. And the market will surely respond – expect to see countless toy versions of that adorable rolling droid everywhere you look in the coming months. However, there is only one BB-8 toy that can be controlled by your mobile device and recognizes your voice and develops an ongoing personality as you play with it. Yes, Sphero’s BB-8 looks like the droid to beat.

Sphero, a company specializing in “connected” toys that bridge the gap between mobile applications and physical playthings, has revealed the first official look at their new BB-8 toy and it certainly looks astonishing. And adorable. Like really adorable. Like “this thing is going to replace your pets” adorable.

Here’s the official description for the toy:

Over the years, the magic of Star Wars™ has always lived on screen and in our imaginations. Thanks to our advancements in technology, we’ve made it possible to bring a new part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens™ into your home.

Meet BB-8™ - the app-enabled Droid™ that’s as authentic as it is advanced. BB-8 has something unlike any other robot - an adaptive personality that changes as you play. Based on your interactions, BB-8 will show a range of expressions and even perk up when you give voice commands. Set it to patrol and watch your Droid explore autonomously, make up your own adventure and guide BB-8 yourself, or create and view holographic recordings.

It’s now possible to explore the galaxy with your own trusty Astromech Droid by your side. BB-8 is more than a toy - it’s your companion.

That certainly sounds … ambitious. The list of functions and features backs it up:

•Authentic Movement // Guide your BB-8 with a smartphone or tablet

• Listens & Responds // BB-8 recognizes and reacts to your voice

• Holographic Communication // Record and view virtual holographic videos with BB-8

• Autonomous Behavior // BB-8 has a mind of its own - explore the Star Wars™ galaxy together

• Adaptive Personality // Your BB-8’s unique attitude and actions evolve as you interact

So this BB-8 will learn and adapt and recognize your voice and do your bidding? If it works as described, this will be the closest thing we’ve ever seen to an actual working droid. Which means we’re a few years away from having astromech and protocol droids hanging out in our homes, repairing our garbage disposals and translating translating our conversations into over six million forms of communication. Or we’re a few years away from a robot uprising. Either or. Pick one. But if this is the begining of a robot apocalypse, at least it’s going to be one cute robot apocalypse.

Scroll on down to check out additional images of BB-8. This little thing will be available to take home starting on Force Friday, aka, September 4. It will retail for $149.99.
