When the trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ was released yesterday, there was plenty to dissect and debate: Who was the shadowy figure at the end of the trailer? Why was John Boyega in a Stormtrooper uniform? Why was Daisy Ridley speeding away? But one of the biggest points of contention was the voice over, which opens the trailer with “There has been an awakening... Do you feel it?” Fans and critics have been speculating over whether that voice is Andy Serkis, Max Von Sydow, or possibly Benedict Cumberbatch. And now we have an answer.

The confirmation comes from Hitfix: the voice is most definitely Andy Serkis. I sat on a panel yesterday at the Alamo Drafthouse where we argued over who the voice belonged to, and I was among the few who firmly believed that it is Serkis, who stars in the film, although whether he’s playing a live-action or motion-capture role remains unknown.

The folks at Collider were the first to definitively say the voice belongs to Serkis, but Drew at Hitfix was able to verify it more officially:

For the record, that is Andy Serkis you hear in the trailer. I was able to verify this, although I was not able to uncover any further information about the role he plays. Here’s what I do know, though. He’s playing a pivotal role in the film, although he will not have a lot of screen time.

This is an interesting bit of information about Serkis’ part in the film, and when you consider the voice over dialogue, we can speculate that his character will at the very least be someone rather enigmatic and powerful.

For all the leaks from J.J. Abrams’ mystery box, there’s still a lot we don’t know about ‘The Force Awakens,’ and a lot we won’t learn until the film hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
