First ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ TV Spot With Even More Footage!
Just when you thought it was safe to sleep in on a Sunday morning, comes the first full Star Wars: The Force Awakens TV spot and, like the surprise Japanese trailer, it’s a doozy.
J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm have been very protective with the Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers, hoping to keep all the film’s secrets intact before the opening on December 18. But, it’s hard to watch this trailer and not think they’re very clearly telegraphing something to the audiences, especially when Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) intones, “I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes…I know your eyes!” as a shot of Rey fades into a shot of Han Solo.
What’s also interesting in this trailer is how very focused this is on Rey. We’ve long since known that she really is the hero of this next trilogy of films (despite the many appearances of Finn wielding Luke’s lightsaber), but as more and more footage highlights her character — there is barely any Finn or Poe Dameron or Kylo Ren or Han Solo — it’s becoming clear that Disney not only wants to sell her story, but they want to make sure that an entire generation of young girls knows that Star Wars isn’t just for boys any more. We’ve heard rumblings that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is testing through the roof in all but one key demographic — young girls — which is sort of a shame, considering the film itself, but also something that Disney will work on going forward.
Rey isn’t depicted in this trailer just walking around lost or hanging around with other familiar Star Wars characters, she’s very much at the center of a lot of action; whether it’s attacking scavengers on Jakku, firing a blaster at Kylo Ren or piloting the Millennium Falcon. Now the question comes, from whom did she learn those particular set of skills?
We’ll find out when Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18.
