Star Wars may be using Rogue One to introduce a few ship designs we’ve yet to see from the original trilogy, but even at a nearby point in the timeline, Star Wars Rebels wants to earn back some of the classic designs. So while we may not see the iconic X-Wing flanking the Ghost anytime soon, supervising director Dave Filoni says they have big plans for the famed four-wing fighter.

/Film managed to interview Filoni out of Star Wars Celebration, where among other tidbits, the X-Wing came up in discussion of Star Wars Rebels Season 3. The Disney XD series has already featured A-Wings and a specific origin for the B-Wing, while Season 3 has already been seen to feature Y-Wings. Could the X be far behind?

Everybody wants X-Wings, you know. It’s a tricky thing in Star Wars because now we have so many things going on across so many platforms. That, you know, when you’re creating a show and you’re able to create, you know, stories in Star Wars, I try to see well how can we make this different? So one of the choices that we made early on was that we weren’t gonna have X-Wings at least early on in the show. We’ve done B-Wings. Now we’re doing Y-Wings. But I’ve tried to stay away from a lot of the original trilogy kind of New Hope backbone stuff, because that, I want that to be clearly this is not that story. We’re a different cell.

In particular, Filoni pointed to the classic P-52 introduction from Empire of the Sun (featuring mini-Christian Bale!), that the inevitable introduction of the X-Wing fighter should bring with it a sense of earned excitement. In either case, Season 3 still has plenty to look forward to, between Grand Admiral Thrawn, Wedge Antilles and much more.

Season 3 will premiere in fall 2016, but how long until more classic Star Wars designs make their way to Rebels?
