Following a week of new details from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we knew we had another big day of news in store from the franchise, as the Star Wars portion of today’s D23 panel has offered lots of new details on the upcoming films. Disney and Lucasfilm have released the first official photo from Star Wars: Rogue One, and they’ve announced their latest cast members: Alan Tudyk and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen.

The casts for these new Star Wars films continue to get more and more amazing with each announcement — we live in a world where Adam Driver and Gwendoline Christie and Oscar Isaac (and, and, and, etc.) are in a new Star Wars film. And now we live in a world where Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk will appear in the first Star Wars anthology film. The studios also confirmed the previously rumored casting of Donnie Yen, while revealing the first official photo, which you can see above (thanks to Movies.com for the high-res image).

Felicity Jones and Diego Luna lead the cast of the film, which is said to center on an attempted heist of the plans for the Death Star. As you can see in the photo above (which also features co-stars Yen and Riz Ahmed), they appear to be space pirates or smugglers of some kind, similar to Han Solo. The image looks surprisingly dark and a bit gritty, but I’m thrilled that we’re getting a Star Wars film centering on a woman character.

Ben Mendelsohn has yet to be confirmed for the cast, though he’s been heavily rumored to play the main villain — perhaps given Mikkelsen’s film and TV history, he’s taken the antagonist role? As for Tudyk, it’s unclear which role he’ll be playing, but he’s well-known for his character acting and voice roles, so it could be something non-human.

Lucasfilm and Disney also revealed that the new anthology films are no longer called “anthology films”; instead, they’re each being referred to as “A Star Wars Story,” which definitely doesn’t sound as cool as an anthology.

Star Wars: Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards and hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
